NARI CEO: The Business Skill I Needed at My First Promotion

Sep 14, 2017 3:08:40 PM

FredUlreich.jpgMy first job out of college was in retail marketing with an international oil company.  Anything and everything to do with service stations, from the refineries to the fuel pumps, that was the business.

My first promotion was to be a supervisor of 22 company-owned service stations with more than 150 employees.

I had the skills to motivate and manage the human resources area, so that was the easy part for me.

The challenging part--what I had to learn along the way--was the additional analytical skills necessary.  Not just markup, margin, and profitability.  It was the mix of products and how they were merchandised and sold.

Shortly after that, I was accepted to graduate school so I could advance my skills. With every new role and ever-increasing responsibilities, ongoing learning was critical to my career success.

This is true for every professional in every industry.  Which is why the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) is proud to be a partner sponsor for the first-ever NEXTgen Future Business Leaders Conference by the SEN Design Group.

Why is it important for NARI to sponsor NEXTGen?

Conscious of the struggles companies and consumers face to find skilled workers, NARI strongly supports shaping the next generation of business owners and managers in the kitchen and bath and design/build industry.

These are the leaders who will be on the front lines of earning the trust of homeowners in our industry. That trust will be through proven professionalism and financial acumen, as much as through creativity and craftsmanship.

NARI is the only professional trade association dedicated solely to the remodeling industry. Members include contractors, builders, and supply chain partners. NARI offers its members eight valuable certifications that demonstrate proficiencies in general remodeling and specialties, as well as training and education opportunities for managers and employees to improve your company's profitability and efficiency.

NARI also recently launched an industry-changing Accreditation program. The NARI Accredited Remodeling Company (ARC) program was created to support both consumers and remodelers.

Members are also eligible to receive prestigious awards, including Contractor of the Year (CotY) award. Our nationwide public relations efforts garner national media attention, while consumers view the NARI logo as the mark of a professional, making NARI membership an investment in your company’s success!

Learn more about NARI or connect with us on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.

I’ve had many great learning opportunities since those days managing service stations. I’m glad NARI and SEN can provide the same opportunities to the newest members of the remodeling industry.  I look forward to meeting you in Austin!
