NARI CEO: The Business Skill I Needed at My First Promotion

FredUlreich.jpgMy first job out of college was in retail marketing with an international oil company.  Anything and everything to do with service stations, from the refineries to the fuel pumps, that was the business. 

My first promotion was to be a supervisor of 22 company-owned service stations with more than 150 employees. 

I had the skills to motivate and manage the human resources area, so that was the easy part for me.

The challenging part--what I had to learn along the way--was the additional analytical skills necessary.  Not just markup, margin, and profitability.  It was the mix of products and how they were merchandised and sold. 

Shortly after that, I was accepted to graduate school so I could advance my skills. With every new role and ever-increasing responsibilities, ongoing learning was critical to my career success.
